From Jingdezhen to England: How Xavier d'Entrecolles Inspired Xavier Britain
At Xavier Britain, we proudly celebrate the heritage and artistry of fine bone china made in England. But the name "Xavier" is more than just elegant—it's a tribute to a remarkable figure in the history of porcelain: Father Xavier d'Entrecolles, the Jesuit missionary who first revealed the secrets of Chinese porcelain to Europe.
His curiosity, dedication to learning, and deep appreciation for craftsmanship continue to inspire everything we do.
Who Was Xavier d'Entrecolles?
Xavier d'Entrecolles (1664–1741) was a French Jesuit priest and missionary who spent many years in China during the early 18th century. While serving in the city of Jingdezhen—the world-famous capital of Chinese porcelain—he became fascinated by the methods used to create the highly prized, translucent porcelain that had captivated Europe for centuries.
At the time, Chinese porcelain was a closely guarded mystery. European potters could not replicate its quality or appearance, and it remained a luxury item imported at great expense.
Revealing the Secrets of Porcelain
In a series of letters written between 1712 and 1722, Father d'Entrecolles meticulously documented the raw materials, production techniques, and kiln practices used in Jingdezhen. These letters, published in Europe, gave an unprecedented, detailed account of how Chinese porcelain was made—from kaolin clay and petuntse (porcelain stone) to glazing and high-temperature firing.
These writings were revolutionary. For the first time, European potters had access to the technical knowledge needed to create porcelain that could rival that of China.
In many ways, d'Entrecolles laid the foundation for the European porcelain industry, influencing the rise of Meissen in Germany, Sèvres in France, and later the development of fine bone china in England, perfected by Josiah Spode in the late 18th century.
